Taiwan, UK establish carbon capture partnership, deepen energy cooperation

Taiwan and Britain established a partnership on carbon capture, utilization and storage (CCUS) during energy talks in October, expanding cooperation on energy security, offshore wind and power grid resilience.

About 80 representatives from government, industry and research organizations attended the 21st Taiwan-UK Renewable Energy Conference and the eighth Taiwan-UK Energy Dialogue, organized by the British Office Taipei and Taiwan’s Energy Administration.

The talks came as Taiwan seeks to address rising electricity demand driven by the artificial intelligence industry. Chiang Wen-jo, Taiwan’s deputy minister of economic affairs, said Taiwan would continue diversifying its energy sources, strengthening its power grid and improving energy efficiency to ensure reliable supplies.

Greg Gardner, Britain’s deputy trade commissioner for Northeast Asia and director of trade and investment in Japan, said the UK hoped to deepen cooperation with Taiwan by drawing on its experience in offshore and floating wind, marine engineering and supply chain management.

Technical discussions focused on CCUS, grid resilience and offshore wind. Participants exchanged experience on grid upgrades, microgrids, subsea cable installation and maritime supply chains.

Taiwan’s Industrial Technology Research Institute and Britain’s Offshore Renewable Energy Catapult will also continue technical exchanges to support digital innovation and regional cooperation.

Under the new CCUS partnership, government agencies and research institutions will share experience on policy, regulation, research and technology development. The two sides also plan to explore commercial and investment opportunities as cooperation develops.
